The company RIEDEL is a family owned, 300 year-old crystal company known to be the inventor of varietal specific stemware. Riedel is the first company in history to recognize that the taste of a beverage is affected by the shape of the vessel from which it is consumed, and has been recognized for its revolutionary designs which complement primarily alcoholic beverages.

2016 is a year of anniversaries for Riedel. The company is celebrating being in business for 260 years while Vinum - the company's most successful glassware range - is turning thirty. 1986 was not just an important year for Riedel but for all wine lovers around the world. The launch of the machine-made Vinum glass collection by Riedel Glas fundamentally changed the drinking glass culture. In 1973, Claus J. Riedel, the ninth generation of the family-run company, introduced a winefriendly, handcrafted and hand blown range of glasses. The 'Sommeliers' range is now world famous. In 1986, his son, Georg J. Riedel, presented a further innovation which would become even more significant: the first varietal-specific machine-made glass in history – Vinum!

My wife and I like martinis and manhattans, so I wanted to get her some elegant crystal martini glasses for her birthday. After reading all the reviews, I selected these “Riedel Vinum XL Martini Glasses.” They were the most classic crystal glasses I could find without unnecessary decoration or goofy stems.

The design is just right, with a thin stem and a sturdy bowl. The glasses are noticeably heavy—much heavier than the cheap martini glasses we had been using, but not as light and airy as handmade crystal. These Reidel Vinum series glasses promise to be less breakable, which is good. At this price, I don’t want to replace them anytime soon!

I like the size; they hold a double easily enough, without being “novelty size” like too many modern martini glasses. My wife loved them, and we are pleased with them overall. We have definitely put these glasses to the test!

Riedel is an excellent brand I have used for a long time. It compares well to other high quality wine glasses and they are pricey. This style has no lip and the glass is very thin. We have lousy water in our area so all our wine glasses have to be hand washed as the dishwasher just makes a spotty mess of them. I have had very good luck using the ecloth brand polishing cloth on Amazon to remove spots. I can get my fist into this glass to dry it well but have proven great care must be taken to not break them while washing and drying.

Any red wine will do well with this glass so I don't make a religion out of matching the glass to the particular wine. It shows off the color of a pinot noir beautifully.

If you need a nice hostess or holiday gift, a set of these would be appreciated by anyone who loves the whole wine experience.

My only beef is the price on these fluctuates like crazy.

On to the glasses. I did a wine tasting that had you drink the same wine from different glasses. The varietal specific glasses make a difference.
