Product Description

In 1953, the ascent of Everest remained the last of Earth's great challenges. Standing at over 29,000 ft, the world's highest mountain posed a fearsome challenge and had already claimed thirteen lives in previous expeditions. When Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay finally achieved the impossible and became the first men to stand atop Everest, it was an event that stunned the world and defined an era. Facing treacherous winds, sub-zero temperatures and battling altitude sickness, Sir Edmund's incredible achievement remains one of the greatest adventure stories of all time; the epic journey of a man from modest beginnings who overcame adversity to reach the highest point on Earth. For the first time ever, and with the support of the Hillary family, Sir Edmund's story is brought to life using both original color footage and photographs and dramatized recreations of the stunning assault. Both a classic triumph of the underdog story and a gripping, cinematic experience, BEYOND THE EDGE is a tale of human endurance, tenacity and courage in the face of overwhelming odds. Odds.

The most accurate and complete story of the first time men stood on the top of the world.
4 Stars
The most accurate and complete story of the first time men stood on the top of the world.
The archival color motion pictures and stills, the voices of the mountaineers, climbers and international experts, the newsreels , 3D recreations and Sir Edmund Hillary all have been assembled to provide a docu-drama film presenting the most accurate and complete story of the first time men stood on the top of the world. As Sir Hillary said, "It's not the mountain we conquer - but ourselves". Filming locations include Aoraki/Mt. Cook National Park, New Zealand and Mt. Everest. Highly Recommended.

One of the very finest exposes of Sir Edmund Hillary's legendary 1953 Everest Expedition. I have read many books about this expedition and watched numerous documentaries. But this one was special. It really dug deep into the psychology of Hillary and his all important sherpa, Tenzing Norgay. The book explores how their personal backgrounds and ability to think for each other made them uniquely poised to take on and conquer one of the greatest risks of all time (even to this day) and to ultimately accomplish a truly immortal feat for the ages. It was also a really cool format in terms of blending in live action sequences with documentary footage and even the voices of both men. For those that don't know of this 1953 accomplishment, you should see this movie. I never tire of watching it.

(This is a review for the Russian movie, not the Mt. Everest documentary. Amazon seems to have combined the reviews for the two.)

I’ve been waiting for months for this movie to come to Prime, and it’s finally here! I knew I wanted to see it since I saw the trailer a while back. People with powers in a casino? Sign me up! This movie has a lot of bad reviews for some reason (a 4.4/10 on IMDb) but it was actually pretty damn good. An entertaining flick with likable characters and cool special effects. I’m not sure what people expected?

Now, I only had two problems with it. First, as others have mentioned, there seems to be some dubbing going on here. Antonio Banderas thankfully keeps his own voice, but the main actor seems to have been dubbed over even when he’s speaking English. His new voice is lower in the mix than the rest of the voices/sounds. While this can be annoying if you pay attention to it, I decided to just go with it. I would have preferred to have watched the original version, if one is available, though. The second problem I had was a plot hole. There’s one scene in the movie where the characters with powers seem to forget that they have any powers at all. It didn’t make any sense, except to move the plot along. Maybe they could have come up with something that could temporarily depower them? That would have been a pretty easy fix.

Overall, I really liked this movie. It was fun and interesting. And I say that as someone who can’t stand dubbed movies (I can read subtitles, thank you very much), but I made an exception for this movie because of the cool concept and the special effects. If you can get past the subpar dub job, this is a pretty good movie.

The premise is pretty interesting. It felt like Oceans 11 meets Xmen. But the execution was terrible. I had so much hope I keep watching even after I was pretty sure I didn't like it at all. I finally quit watching at what was probably the climax of the movie. When the whole team was at max risk of being caught, and I realized I didn't care if they make it or not, nor do I have to keep watching. So I turned it off. The CGI was over done for the story. Less budget for CGI and more on Story would have been great. Even in the context of a fantasy world many elements of the story didn't make sense. It is also weird that everything "sounds" dubbed over but they are actually speaking English. Its hard to explain why this is a problem, but it definitely created a weird distraction that would have been less so if the movie was really in another language with subtitles.

This film about the first 2 men to climb Everest is a terrific combination of actual 16mm flim of the expedition blended with CGI, and actor reenactments. And it moves between these 3 mediums so seamlessly you can easily forget your watching a recreation of an event that happened over 60 years ago. The narration interwoven with the film by the actual climbers and their family members is tender & heartfelt. This is not a 'flashy, scary' climbing movie like "Touching the Void" which I also enjoyed very much. Its a slow moving, thoughtful presentation of 2 men who became the first to climb Everest after 13 men before them had died in the attempt. What does come thru tho is how incredibly brave all the climbers are and just what 'bad-asses' Hillary & Norgay were. You don't have to know anything about Mountain Climbing or 'why they do it?' to enjoy this film. What you come away with is how their conquest of Everest rivals that of Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon.

Oceans Eleven, but with super powers, kinda.

Yes, there is an English Dub, over and English movie, which is weird, but it gives it a neat sort of narration, via a second person viewing it experience.

I found it neat, though i had to imagine it was him narrating the events, after the fact, via his memories.

Overall great movie, so long as that one hitch doesn't hold it back for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A vivid presentation of the 1953 Everest expedition

Anyone with an interest in mountaineering will know most of the basic facts presented in this film. However, by cutting back and forth from a reenactment of the climb to original film clips, as well as by using recordings to let the expedition members explains points themselves, this film brings the whole enterprise to life. Thus, even though I have read the books by Hunt and Tenzing Norgay (he related his version of events to an American journalist and many years ago I found the book in a second-hand bookshop) I found this film well-worth watching.
